Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the henna tattoo last?
A henna design can last anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks depending on where it is applied. The longest-lasting henna designs are around the feet and ankles, followed by the hands and wrists, followed by the lower body (lower back and belly). The shortest-lasting designs are those applied on the upper arm and shoulders/chests

Why?
As henna only stains the upper layers of the skin, the designs fade as cells are replaced. The longest-lasting designs are those applied on areas that are exposed and accumulate dead skin cells.

Does it darken evenly?
The henna tends to produce darker tattoos in some areas than in others. Hands and feet darken well. The darkest tattoos are those on the palms, soles, and fingertips/toes. However, these will fade sooner than other areas. Lower body designs are slightly lighter than hands and feet and the lightest designs are armbands.

Is there anything I can do to help my henna produce darker results?
During the processing time (when the henna is on your skin), what you need is for the henna to sit on your skin for as long as possible, with plenty of moisture and warmth. If your henna contains large, filled-in areas or thick lines, the henna will take longer to dry ad so it will have more processing time. If your design includes thin lines, then it will dry faster. That is why sometimes we apply some lemon-sugar mixture on the henna as it begins to dry. The lemon remoistens the henna and the sugar will keep it stuck to your skin longer.

Do not apply any lotion to your skin before a henna application as this will seal off your skin from the henna.

Do not wash of your henna with water. Wait for it to dry completely then scratch it off. Be careful about any residual henna under your nails ans they will stain when moistened.

Do not go swimming during the first 1-2 days after application as the chlorinated water will bleach out your tattoo before it has properly darkened.

Do protect the area of skin where your design is applied, do not allow it to dry out and do not exfoliate that area.

Do apply olive oil after you have removed your henna design. It will begin a bright orange and gradually darken to a copper brown over the next 24-48 hours. During that time, keep the area moistened and apply olive oil before every shower.

How do I remove a henna tattoo?
Once the tattoo fades and appears grainy (especially when on the feet), it is probably ready to be removed. Exfoliate and scrub the dead skin on that area and the henna will begin to disappear.

What is henna paste made of?
Henna paste is made of dry, crushed leaves from the henna plant, lemon juice, and eucalyptus oil. Natural (red) henna is body-safe and hypo-allergenic.

I’m getting a manicure/pedicure and I want a henna tattoo on my feet. What should I do first?
Get your pedicure first such that your skin is fresh and exfoliated. Avoid lotion until after you have gotten your henna (or keep the lotion to the parts where you’re not getting henna).

Can I keep my henna on overnight?
Generally, you don’t need to keep the henna on for more than a few hours to get good results. However, the longer the better. Make sure your henna is thoroughly wrapped before going to bed, though, so that you don’t stain your sheets. Henna stains on clothes and sheets do not come off!
